The Jefferson County Fire Marshal and local Fire District Chiefs met on Tuesday, June 30 to review current weather, fuel moisture, and fire behavior conditions ahead of the Independence Day holiday.
Based on current conditions, Jefferson County will remain at a Moderate Fire Danger rating through the July 4th holiday weekend.
Moderate does not mean no risk. Fires can still start and spread from accidental causes, especially around dry grass, brush, trees, structures, fireworks, campfires, grills, and anything that creates heat or sparks.
What is allowed with caution:
• Campfires in approved fire rings at established campsites
• Campfires in properly maintained home fire rings
• Propane fire rings and propane camp stoves
• Barbecues and grills when used safely and attended
What is not allowed:
• Land clearing burning
• Yard debris burning
• Burn barrels
• Sky lanterns
• Fireworks on public lands
• Backcountry or dispersed campfires on Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park lands during current restrictions
On Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park lands, campfires are only allowed in established fire rings in designated developed campgrounds and recreation sites. Campfires are not allowed on Olympic National Park beaches during this restriction period.
We know there are strong opinions about fireworks. Some people enjoy them as part of the holiday, and others are concerned about fire danger, pets, veterans, noise, and safety. Our role is simple: public safety.
Brinnon Fire Department has increased staffing for the holiday weekend and is prepared to respond if needed, but prevention is still the best protection.
Please help keep Brinnon safe:
• Use fireworks only where and when they are legally allowed
• Keep fireworks away from dry grass, brush, trees, homes, vehicles, and propane tanks
• Keep water nearby
• Never relight a failed firework
• Soak used fireworks before disposal
• Closely supervise children
• Be considerate of neighbors, pets, and veterans
• Call 911 for fires, injuries, dangerous explosives, or immediate threats
Please remember, 911 is for emergencies. General fireworks questions or routine complaints should be handled through the appropriate non-emergency number.
Celebrate responsibly, know the rules, and help protect our community, homes, firefighters, emergency responders, and the natural beauty of Jefferson County.
